DC UNIVERSE Month 90, Part 1

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #10 by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta. Batman/Bruce has been captured and is now known as Test Subject 27. Days later, he escapes but is apprehended by ‘The Prime’: Bane. Test Subject 27 was violent and combative until about three weeks into his captivity when he refused to eat and had to have a feeding tube installed. But this is a ruse as he has removed some of his own teeth to use as a weapon while also adjusting the feeding tube to expel stomach acid during combat. By collecting his own waste, he has manufactured something akin to gunpowder. He escapes again, collecting his costume, and encounters his friend Waylon Jones, who has been mutated, and Bayman rides him like a horse as he continues his escape. Bane talks with Dr. Arkham and is prepared for the final phase..

ABSOLUTE FLASH #5 by Jeff Lemire and Al Kaplan. Wally battles the flaming individual and realizes they may have a shared connection because of their powers. The pair fight, ending up in the sewers and eventually attacking the Dibney Mission. Grodd continually tells Wally to stop fighting the creature and help him instead. Meanwhile, the Rogues complain about waiting for their next assignment when Professor Thawne arrives and reminds them that their powers can easily be taken away. It is revealed that Grodd and West are in Central City and they have confronted Mick Rory, who is a former colleague. At the fight, Wally is overwhelmed by the fire and is transported to somewhere in space where he is visited by a giant hand. He wakes back at the mission and flees. In the end, Wally’s father makes his way into a ship kept in the facility and discovers creatures help in stasis.

ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN #4 by Al Ewing and Jahnoy Lindsay. In the present, Hall, possessed by the black hand, battles against Joe, asking her what happened in Evergreen. In the past, Jo demands a meeting with Abin Sur, asking him why he has killed everyone. Sure explains he has not killed them and they have been sent to Oa and judgement is in progress. He also says that initiates need to be selected to fight the darkness and the weaponeers of Qard. As he attempts to depart, Jo reaches for him and the ring which Jon threw and she wears tears a hole in his barrier. She is instantly engulfed in green light and the barrier comes down; replaced with a giant version of the Lantern symbol. Later, a helicopter containing Carol Ferris and Hector Hammond arrives, with him claiming this city now belongs to him.

ABSOLUTE MARTIAN MANHUNTER #5 by Deniz Camp and Javier Rodriguez. Middleton City is in darkness because of the attack on the power plants and is being described as the ‘great darkness’. Weeks pass on the city is plunged into absolute chaos with two person teams of teens and their “shadow selves” looting electronics and descending into barbaric acts. John has the Martian Manhunter check on Bridget. At a diner, John sees people eating what he sees as tainted hamburgers. In the end, he is hit by an ambulance causing John to see himself “swimming in a sea of darkness.”

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #9 by Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval. Superman has been critically injured and is undergoing a medical procedure to help save his life, with him having flashbacks to his like on Krypton. There is an attack from the Peacekeepers and Superman tries to remove the bullets by himself but is overwhelmed so the Omegas use a Father Box upon him. Meanwhile, .Lois is at Lazarus and confronts Ra’s al Ghul, who tells her to stay in line as he threatens her father’s life. Superman and the Omegas battle the Peacekeepers but things go badly as Primus is ready to execute the Peacekeepers and a Boom Tube is activated, getting most of them away. Superman argues with Primus about her methods and he is about to leave when he is informed that Jimmy was left behind and captured. In the end, Jimmy is being interrogated by Lois.

ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN #10 by Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman. Diana, Ferdinand, and Petra are trapped by Clea’s fish-men. Diana makes the decision to leave with Petra and promises to rescue Ferdinand after he pushes Petra to safety, leading to Clea demanding that Petra be captured and Diana be slain. She makes her way through the maze and opens a doorway, telling Petra to walk through it, leading to her appearing in the Hieron with Steve, Etta and the others. The fish-men catch up with Diana and she is overcome with hallucinogens and is shoved into a pit  where she will have to fight for her life.

ACTION COMICS #1088 by Mark Waid and Skylar Partridge. Young Clark is still trying to adjust to his public outing as Superboy. Government agents arrive in Smallville in search of clues about Superboy. A fire breaks out at school and Clark becomes Superboy to save his friends, leading to him confronting the head of the company that didn’t really install the school’s sprinkler system, forcing him to fight back the anger he feels. In the end, Clark’s teacher arrives at the Kent house, saying he is here to talk to Superboy..

AQUAMAN #7 by Jeremy Adams and Michael Shelfer. Aquaman and Zan are trying to avoid Demon Dagon’s forces when the Nautilus arrives. They arrive at the Flowway, which takes them to Lost Atlantis. Aquaman calls out for Mera but encounters a woman who resembles her, only to find out that she is Andrina-his daughter. He also encounters aged Garth and Jackson and, upon finding Mera, sees she is old and dying, as Dagon had manage to suck out any spirit she once had. Dagon arrives and Aquaman teams up with his daughter to fight back.

BATGIRL #9 by Tate Brombal and Takeshi Miyazawa. Cassandra finally arrives at Dragon Ranch and meets Ben Turner: AKA Bronze Tiger. Explaining that her mother is dead, she demands to know who or what the Jade Tiger is. The pair fight before they are interrupted by Ben’s son Tenji, who is revealed to be the Jade Tiger. The two of them battle and during the fight he reveals he is the son of the Bronze Tiger and Lady Shiza, making him Cassandra’s brother. At that moment, Norbu the Untested of the Unburied clan, arrives, will plans to kill Batgirl.

BATMAN #161 by Geof Loeb, Jim Lee, and Scott Williams. Robin has been captured and Batman offers himself in a trade but is mocked by Hush. The heroes escape due to Damian using ‘birds’ they he has upgraded from a design of his father. Hush flees and Batman goes after him, getting saved by Damian and Bane, who Damian broke out of Blackgate as part of a debt he owed. Elsewhere, Jason and Nightwing find themselves held at gunpoint by The Joker. But Nightwing forces them to flee, leaving The Joker in control and angering Jason. After looking at clues in Hush’s hideout, Batman heads to the hospital where Barbara is visiting with her wounded father. Batgirl confronts her mentor, blaming him for her father’s condition and she fights him, sending him through a rooftop chimney. As he recovers, he finds himself surrounded by Huntress, Catwoman, Nightwing and Robin.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #23 by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Miguel Mendonca. With Etrigan’s help, Batman sees the ceremony that brought memento into this world and took Nicodemus Crowe’s son as its host. In the city under Gotham, Damian and the Gotham Irregulars team up to fight against Memento. Batman arrives and saves his son and the others, while Memento flees. Lautrec chases after  and finds Eddie Burroughs. When Batman arrives, he finds her knocked out and is soon knocked out too. When he wakes, he finds the two of them captured and he envisions the death of his parents while Memento trains a gun on Batman.

BATMAN AND ROBIN: JASON TODD #2 by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen. The masked man from last issue is challenged by Batman but the person flees, saying that Batman has gotten soft. Robin confronts Batman, angered that the hero believed Robin killed this man. In a flashback, we see that the masked man had arrived and shot the crook. After teaming up with Nightwing, Robin heads off and meets with the masked man, who asks if Robin is with Batman or him. In the end, the masked man and Robin are seen swinging through the city.

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #41 by Mark Waid and Adrian Gutierrez. Robin finds himself running from Bizarros when Batman and Superman arrive. Superman tells them that they are on Bizarro World and they were transported there because of a dimensional rift. There are multiple Bizarro Supermen here, along with other Bizarros, some of whom are crying for help. They take one, a Bizarro version of Jimmy Olsen, who tells of some infection that is causing the Bizarros to stop thinking backward. The heroes find an old version of the duplicator ray that created the Bizarros and Robin activates the ray and hits the Bizarros with Blue K. They head to the Fortress of Multitudes where Bizarros Superman and Bizarro Batman are waiting for them.

BIRDS OF PREY #23 by Kelly Thompson and Sami Basri. Oracle’s headquarters has exploded, apparently killing Barbara, Poem and Cela, which leads Dinah, Cassandra and Sin to go to their meeting spot. Once there, they discover that Barbara, Poe,  and Cela are very much alive, as Barbara blew it up to keep the enemy from gaining access to the Oracle system. They devise a plan that takes the Birds into the Shadow Army Base. Dinah unleashes her scream that immediately affects the villains, except for Barda, who is possessed by Inque. In response, Cela brings in the whole team: Harley, Poe, Constantine, Grace Choi, Onyx and Vixen.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1099 by Tom Taylor and Lee Garbett. Bullock has been tortured and now has been wounded in an intense gunfight. Penguin pulls Bullock to safety as Batman fights against Ambrose and Elixir’s soldiers, resulting in them fleeing.. Batman instructs Oracle to scan the fleeing criminals to deduce their identities. The Penguin captures Ambrose and he and Bullock interrogate him, scaring him into cooperating. The soldiers are promised long lives for helping but it is actually just a Ponzi scheme that never delivers, and the only people who prosper, through a Lazarus Pit, is Ambrose, Bullock’s now deceased torturer, and the leader-Perpetuam Vita. They go to Vita’s compound and see he is living in a sterile environment. He kills Ambrose and them seals himself in for the next five years, with Batman promising to be there when that time ends. In the end, Bullock visits Sulley and slips him a vial of Elixir.

FIRE AND ICE: WHEN HELL FREEZES OVER #4 by Joanne Starer and Stephen Byrne. Grodd has arrived and wants to take Linka home, even though she is currently in Charlie’s body. That is when Superman arrives and engages the great ape. In Hell, bea is deponent over killing Beefeater and Tora comforts her. But Bea figures out Tora is really Beezlebub and the real Tora is visiting her imprisoned mother. Beezlebub arrives at the prison and Tora offers herself in exchange for her mother’s freedom. He offers a deal: Tora’s mother can go back to the real world if Bea takes her place.

THE FLASH #23 by Simon Spurrier and Vasco Georgiev. The Shade meets with one of the Wallys and Wally’s son, explaining how he cut a deal with Eclipso to end his life because he didn’t want to live without her in his life. Jai transports to The Shades apartment and reaches inside of her. When he returns, he explains that The Shade was lied to as whatever was killing her was put in there by Eclipso and Jai has removed it. The Shade, now teaming up with the heroes, explains that the black diamond was mined on Apokolips and that Wally and Jai should find the flaw inside the diamond. They find the diamond and also Foxy who has been holding Eclipso at bay with his love for his family. Meanwhile, the real Wally is joined by the Flash Family, as they are looking to their ultimate destruction. Suddenly Irey lights up an eliminates the entire horde. Wally makes the decision to send everyone who isn’t him away because he is facing this alone.

THE FLASH: BAD MOON RISING SPECIAL #1 by Alex Palnadel and Daniel Bayliss. BAD MOON RISING PART FOUR. A scared man finds himself on the run, only to encounter the person he is fleeing: The Shade. Before The Shade can act, Starman arrives, allowing the man to flee. The Shade explains how he met and fell in love with Hope O’Dare, slowly dying of Cancer. The Shade goes into the Shadowlands and meets with Simon Culp before making his way to The Entity, revealed to be Eclipso, where he asks the villain to make him mortal. In exchange, he is forced to be Eclipso’s “guard dog” in his attack on the moon. He eventually ends up killing many of the horde of Wally Wests, until he has a conversation with a severed head that makes him go back and visit Hope. Although he attempts to make her like himself, he heads back to the moon, meeting Wally and his son; saying the boy needs to come “into the Shade”. Continued in THE FLASH #23.

GOTHAM CITY SIRENS: UNFIT FOR ORBIT #1 by Leah Williams and Haining. Harley is taking a shower when a masked thief shows up, revealed to be Selina Kyle. Selina reveals she wants to hire the Destruction Agency for a job and Harley calls Ivy, who is getting “busy” with Janet from HR. Selina reveals she is looking for an artifact known as The Conduit and it is currently housed inside of a private club called Lunaria. Once inside, they subdue the guards and find the “artifact”: a young boy. And this could be a problem because the person in charge is…Despero?

GOTHAM CITY SIRENS: UNFIT FOR ORBIT #2 by Leah Williams and Haining. Harley break The Conduit out of his prison just as Despero and an army of Kalanorians arrive. He uses his mental powers to stop the Sirens from continuing their battle against the Kalanorians, sending Harley into captivity, while Catwoman is stuck with the Kalanorians. And Ivy deduces is not a nightclub but a spaceship preparing to takeoff.

GOTHAM CITY SIRENS: UNFIT FOR ORBIT #3 by Leah Williams and Haining. With everything going badly and Despero drawing the club customers into his ship for fuel, The Conduit triggers the fire alarm and the people flee. Despite that, the ship takes off and is revealed to be a warship to conquer the planet.

GOTHAM CITY SIRENS: UNFIT FOR ORBIT #4 by Leah Williams and Haining. The warship takes off and begins to start compromising Gothamites into Despero’s own image. On the ship, the Sirens try their best to fight back against Despero. The ship leaves the atmosphere but that is only so it get aim the Kala-Ray at the planet

GOTHAM CITY SIRENS: UNFIT FOR ORBIT #5 by Leah Williams and Haining. The fight continues but now Despero is trying to worm his way inside Harley’s head. Ivy tears through the Kalanorians but that made be too late as the Kala-Ray has been deployed and is heading straight for Gotham. At the last possible moment, Ivy is able to shut the ray down and Harley fights back. Despero captures her again but The Conduit shows Ivy the air lock control and Ivy hits the switch, threatening to send all of them into deep space. The Sirens help each other and they stay on the ship but Despero ends up in space. Unfortunately, the Flame of Py’tar is no longer keeping the ship aloft and it begins to fall back to Earth. Leave it to Harley, who sends out a text to a friend and Power Girl arrives to gently lower the ship. When they exit the ship, they get dirty looks from Gothamites even though the Sirens just saved them all. In the end, the Conduit is revealed to be a child and is returned to his home in Bulgaria. But that ray that DIDN’T hit Gotham? It did make it’s way into the ocean and now there are sea creatures that are extensions of Despero.
