Chapters 1-3 of DOOMED: LAST SUN

ACTION COMICS #34: Chapter One of DOOMED: LAST SUN. In Gotham City, Red Hood, Roy and Starfire are rescuing civilians from Brainiac’s invasion but the psychic energy is so strong, they fall under Brainiac’s control. Soon Brainiac affects Luthor and Batman begs Superman to get out of range before he is under control too. Instead, he tries to rescue Baka, who also falls under the control of Brainiac. Lois reaches out to Martian Manhunter for help, and he and Lois join Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman in the Fortress. Superman and J'onn fly to the sun allowing the Man of Steel to absorb the solar energy and manages to open a portal to the Phantom Zone. Brainiac destroys the Justice League Satellite and the mothership is on course to collide with Earth. And the Fortress-it’s being attacked by escapees from the Phantom Zone.

Greg Pax and Aaron Kuder ratchet up the tension and excitement in this episode. Pak’s writing gets better and better and Kuder is hitting his stride with some of the best art of his career. This is the shot in the arm this title, and this character, needed to elevate from where it was.

SUPERMAN WONDER WOMAN #11: Chapter Two of DOOMED: LAST SUN. Having escaped the Phantom Zone, Non and Mongul plan on attacking Earth. Martian Manhunter tries to locate the minds of Lana Lang, Steel and Cyborg, who were inside the justice League Satelite when it exploded. He and Superman attack the Brainiac constructs that are trying to assimilate the trio. Cyborg suggests that Lana and Steel get taken back to Earth while he uses the shuttle to self-repair. Unfortunately, Brainiac takes him over too. Wonder Woman enters the Phantom Zone portal to ask Mongul for help. She promises Mongul and Non that, if they help her, she will return War World to them. If that weren’t bad enough, Superman considers unleashing the Doomsday Virus to defeat Brainiac.

Things look pretty grim for our heroes, especially with plans in motion and deals in play. Seriously: what is Wonder Woman thinking to turn War World back to two of the baddest of the bad? And Superman: is he that desperate that he is prepared to unleash the beast from within? Charles Soule and Thony Silas do an excellent job here as the story is filled with questions and the art completely fits the mood. This storyline is barreling towards what may be a bitter end for someone in the Superman Mythos.

SUPERGIRL #34: Chapter Three of DOOMED: LAST SUN. Supergirl crashes into the apartment of a wheelchair bound boy named Michael. He explains to her how Superman turned into Doomsday and that there was a Kryptonite bomb dropped to stop him. He explains how he loss the use of his legs and how he hasn’t seen his mom and dad since everything that happened in metropolis. She promises to try to find them and does, bringing them to the hospital. She returns to Michael, gives him the goods news and they kiss. Then suddenly everybody in Queens finds themselves affected by Brainiac. When she looks into space, she sees the Cyborg Superman exiting Brainiac’s ship.

Tony Bedard and Karl Moline bring us the penultimate chapter in Last Sun. I’m sorry: I am not a fan of this book, normally don’t read it and the only thing exciting about this issue is the interracial kiss. Actually, just the kiss was cool  and the interracial thing would only have been a big deal if this was in 1968. The art is okay and the story…well-like I said-I don’t read the book and really don’t care. This was a three dollar waste for me.

To be concluded in SUPERMAN DOOMED #2
