THE MUTLIVERSITY MASTERMEN #1 Reviewed

In 1938, Adolf Hitler has been told of a special rocket recovered from the Sudetenland. He goes to the lab where it ended up and is told there was an indestructible boy inside, causing Hitler to proclaim him the "übermensch". Seventeen years later, Overman is leading the German army as it conquers Washington DC: the day where it is said Uncle Sam died. Sixty years later, Overman wakes from a nightmare on the anniversary of Overgirl's death. At the memorial, Overman and the New Reichsmen  dedicate an eternal flame. The narrator of the story, Jürgen Olsen, remarks that he will discover Overman's crime and betray him some day. Uncle Sam arrives and blows out the flame, as a man in a protective suit detonates a suicide bomb that brings down the memorial. Back at their headquarters, the Reichsmen discuss the terrorist’s agenda, based on what the Nazis did in the past. Brunnhilde comments how English is a dead language and the terrorists have weapons from a parallel universe. The bomber, who survived the explosion, has been tortured by Leatherwing and has given up information about the terrorists. Overman mulls over the fact that he continues to try to create a utopia on the world which causes Brunnhilde to tell him she will no longer be his nursemaid. On Ellis Island, Uncle Sam is giving a speech when he meets a group of super-powered followers. A Nazi scientist by the name of Herr Doktor Sivana says these are Freedom Fighters. The next day Overman gives an interview to Olsen where he says they have the bomber in custody. That night, Overman’s wife tells him she thinks ten days of mourning for Overgirl is excessive. She also demands he makes more of a substance from Krypton that has kept her young for the last quarter century, but he says he cannot. At the Eagle's Nest, the Human Bomb escapes and blows holes in the space station before Underwaterman and Leatherwing can get to the teleporter. At the opera festival, Uncle Sam appears and claims he wants to end the fascist empire. Overman tries to catch the Eagle's Nest as it crashes into Metropolis in an effort to end his never-ending battle in the service of a thousand-year Reich. He crawls from the wreckage and kneels in what is left of his city.

Wow! It’s a killer story by Grant Morrison and some really awesome art by Jim Lee. Hey: any comic book that starts with Adolph Hitler sitting on a toilet reading a comic can’t be all bad!
